    Skin Type Guide

    Hyperpigmented Skin

Hyperpigmentation is a condition characterised by the darkening or increased presence of pigment in the skin. It occurs when there is an excess production of melanin, the pigment responsible for giving colour to the skin, hair, and eyes. Hyperpigmentation can be caused by various factors, including sun damage, hormonal changes, ageing, inflammation, and certain medical conditions. It can be evident as patches, spots, or uneven skin tone, and commonly affects areas such as the face, hands, and neck.

Treating hyperpigmentation, or skin discolouration, can be challenging due to various triggers that contribute to this condition. The brown, blotchy, or uneven appearance is caused by melanin, the pigment responsible for the colour of the skin, which serves to shield the skin from harmful UV radiation. Melanin is produced by melanocytes, which are located in the basal layer of the epidermis. These specialised cells, resembling 'octopus-like' tentacles called dendrites, transport melanin granules to the skin cells (keratinocytes) upon exposure to UV light. The main function of melanocytes is to disperse UV light, counteract free radicals, safeguard the cell membrane of the skin from oxidation, and thereby protect the DNA from UV damage. Tyrosinase, a crucial enzyme present within skin cells, plays a significant role in melanin synthesis, making the reduction of tyrosinase activity the primary approach in developing melanogenesis inhibitors.

Kalahari Skincare has developed a formulation that effectively influences the process of melanogenesis in the skin. It reduces and prevents the formation and appearance of melanin. The combination of highly effective ingredients that gently exfoliate the upper layers of the skin, inhibit melanin production by blocking tyrosinase enzymes, reduce tyrosinase activity, and significantly reduce dermal inflammation, results in visibly brighter and more even skin. For enhanced results, professional Phytic Clay Mask and Chemipeel treatments alongside the prescribed home-care treatment prescription are recommended.
